Mayor

The Mayor of Apokoronas is Haralambos Koukianakis (2014-present).

Haralambos Koukianakis was born in 1961 in Nipos of Apokoronas.

He is married to Eftychia Nanadaki from Kampanos Selinou, retired, with whom he has had three children: Ηaravgi, professor of philology, Spyridon – Georgios, private-sector employee, and Konstantinos, a student.

He studied at the former School of Gendarmerie Officers and served as Chief, Secretary or Duty Officer in almost all of the Police Services of the Prefecture of Chania.

In particular, he served at the Police Station of Lakkoi Kydonias as Chief (for two years), at the Police Station of Kampanos Selinou as Chief (for three years), at the Police Department of Kissamos as Adjutant (for ten years), at the Police Department of Nea Kydonia as Adjutant (for ten years), at the Police Department of Chania as Duty Officer (for one year), at the Police Department of Voukolies as Adjutant (for one year) and for shorter periods at the Police Station of Kournas Apokoronou as Chief and at the Police Department of Chora Sfakion as Adjutant.

In recognition of his service, the Force honored him many times with commendations and medals.

His trade union activity began in 1988, when he became one of the pioneers of the trade union movement in the field of the Police. He was elected as a member of the first Hellenic Board of Directors of the Police Union based in Athens. In the elections of the 16th & 17th of March 2005 for the selection of the new Board of Directors, he was elected President of the Police Union of the Prefecture of Chania, which had 448 members. Since then he was repeatedly elected as a member of the Panhellenic Federation of Police Employees.

He participated in the 2006 Prefectural Elections as a candidate for the position of Prefectural Councillor with “Χανιά, Ανάπτυξη Τώρα” led by Grigoris Archontakis. He was Deputy Prefect of Commerce and Primary Sector for two years and Head of Civil Protection of the Prefecture of Chania for four years, demonstrating important work and results. In addition, he demonstrated remarkable social action in several associations, such as the International Police Union, the Union of Veterans of the Prefecture of Chania, the Association of Blood Donors of Apokoronas, the Association of Three-Children Families of the Prefecture of Chania and others.

He took part in the Municipal Elections of 2010 as a candidate for Mayor of Apokoronas and Head of “Ενωτική Μαχητική Αποκορωνιώτικη Ανεξάρτητη Κίνηση” (ΕΜΑΑΚ). In the first round he obtained 48.32% of the votes and in the second round 49.66%. He was elected Mayor of Apokoronas in 2014 with a percentage of 51.86% and was re-elected in 2019 with a percentage of 51.84%, as a result of which he remains in this position until today.

He is a member of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Crete, Vice-president of the Public Benefit Foundation “Agia Sophia”, a member of the Board of Directors of the Development Organization of Crete and a member of the three-member Committee of Article 152.
